Planning Your Remodel: Why Starting Early Sets You Up for Success

Nicole Thornton

Right now most people don't want to think about their projects for next year, they're thinking about the upcoming holidays and gift shopping. But if a home remodel is on your mind and you want to get it done next year, now is the time to start planning! A remodel is exciting, but starting early is essential to ensure a smooth process. So here are some tips on why planning ahead is the best move and what to consider.

1. Start Planning Now – It Takes Time

Remodeling isn’t just about picking out new finishes or imagining how your space will look. It’s a multi-step process that involves setting goals, finalizing designs, choosing products, and organizing a timeline. Each phase builds on the previous one, so planning typically takes a minimum of a couple of months depending on project scope. By starting now, you’ll give yourself the time to thoughtfully make each decision, which results in a more satisfying outcome.

2. Factor in Product Lead Times

After planning stage is completed the next step is ordering materials. Many materials and products, especially custom cabinetry or other custom materials, can take 6 weeks (or more) to arrive after ordering. Starting early allows you to secure the products you want without delaying your timeline. It’s a great idea to meet with your designer or supplier to understand which materials will require the most lead time.

3. Consider the Impact of Weather

Weather can be a factor in determining the start date, especially if exterior work or significant construction is part of the plan. Depending on your region, you might want to avoid starting during the hottest or coldest months or when it tends to be rainiest. Spring or early fall can be ideal for many projects, but this varies depending on location and project scope.

4. Allow for Design Revisions

Design is an iterative process. It often takes a few rounds of revisions to finalize a layout that perfectly balances function, aesthetics, and personal style. Starting early gives you the freedom to explore various options without feeling rushed.

5. Secure the Best Contractors and Designers

High-quality contractors and designers are often booked months in advance, especially for spring and summer projects. Planning early gives you a better chance to work with your preferred professionals, ensuring your project is completed with the expertise and attention to detail it deserves.

6. Prepare Your Budget Thoughtfully

Remodeling projects are investments, and budgeting effectively can make a huge difference in your experience and satisfaction. Planning early allows time for gathering accurate quotes, comparing material costs, and building a realistic budget, preferably with room for unexpected expenses.

7. Reduce Stress and Make Better Decisions

Remodeling can be overwhelming, but a longer planning timeline reduces stress. You’ll have time to make decisions thoughtfully, from selecting finishes to choosing layout details. This prevents last-minute compromises and ensures you’re truly happy with your choices.

8. Account for Permit Timelines

Many remodeling projects require permits, and these can take time to process. Some municipalities have longer wait times, so applying early will prevent delays in starting your project.

9. Plan Around Your Family’s Schedule

If you have upcoming family events, holidays, or travel plans, an early start lets you schedule the project around these commitments. This ensures that the remodel is minimally disruptive to your life, so you can enjoy both the project and your personal time.

Starting the process now, you'll be setting yourself up for a well- prepared and timely remodel next year. Enjoy the process!
